Ouchhh collaborated with the Machine Learning Scientists of CERN.

Dark Machine” is an artificial intelligence data painting piece that audiences experienced for the first time after it was exhibited at CERN. This piece uses data obtained from the results of subatomic particle collisions, which is an experimental study conducted in collaboration with 16 preeminent artificial intelligence scientists from Harward, MIT, NYU and CERN.

STATEMENT


CERN's Dark Machines project explores the cutting edge questions about Dark Matter, by using the most advanced techniques available in data science. The data used in this research -provided by the particle accelerator- is the recording of the moment that two subatomic particles collide. These collisions are such infinitesimal events that, for human perception of time and space, they are virtually nonexistent. Yet, through the power of modern science, a collection of event as fleeting as the collision of two subatomic particles, yields gigabytes of multidimensional data, that in turn could be used to unlock the mysteries of the universe.

While scientists and physicists use artificial intelligence to answer such cosmic, existential questions, we use similar techniques of machine learning and artificial intelligence to explore the same data from an artistic standpoint. Each data set available in the Dark Machines repository contains collision data, that could be interpreted as events that go upto dimensions over 40.

While forty dimensional data could truly capture the particle collision, a human mind born from a three dimensional universe cannot comprehend or visualize such information. So, in order to visualize, to reimagine and to ultimately for artistic expression, we make use of autoencoders; a family of machine learning techniques that deals with representing higher dimensional data in lower dimensions.

Through artificial intelligence, we create neural networks that can recreate a 40D data in lower dimensions comprehensible to human mind. This process is complex and creates more information, expressed within its own universe, it's "Latent Space" From a data set with ten thousand collision observations, the process of this dimension reduction would create up to billion points of data, with their own interplay of motion and color through out the process of learning. From a single point in time and subatomic space, digital, probabilistic universes emerge, just like our universe emerges from the ancient interplay of matter and antimatter, which was a subatomic point at the beginning of time.
